The top U-23 men’s amateur league in North America is the United Soccer Leagues’ PDL (Premier Development League), the development ground for elite players. The 2011 season featured a 64-team format within four conferences and eight divisions. The PDL schedule consists of 16 regular-season matches (eight home, eight away).

The schedule is augmented by participation in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and various exhibitions. Players have the ability to compete in the PDL throughout the summer months in a professionalized setting while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. The league is the proving ground for players that aspire to reach the highest-levels of the game, while providing affordable family entertainment within their city. The PDL is the third tier of soccer within the United Soccer Leagues, behind only USSF 2 and USL 2.

In 2011, the West Texas Sockers played in the Mid-South Division, along with the New Orleans Jesters, El Paso Patriots, Baton Rouge Capitals, Laredo Heat, and Rio Grande Valley Grandes.
